Canada – UAVs delivering contraband into prisons in Kingston
UAVs used to smuggle contraband into Joyceville Institution and Collins Bay Institution has increased over the past three months.
On 7 February 2024, at 2:30 a.m., four individuals were arrested for attempting to deliver contraband into Joyceville Institution. Three packages were confiscated, along with mobile phones, narcotics and weapons. The items had an estimated institutional value of CAN$70,000.
An Autel Robotics EVO II Pro RTK V3 drone and controller were also seized. All four suspects were taken to Kingston Police Headquarters and detained pending a bail hearing.
The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) reported on 12 February and 21 February, two further instances where unauthorised items have been remotely delivered by UAV into Joyceville Institution, with a combined institutional value of approximately CAN$136,700.
The CSC announced it will be working in partnership with law enforcement to prosecute those who attempt to deliver contraband into prisons.
