Nigeria – multiple SPBIED attacks in Borno State
On 29 June 2024, four SPBIED attacks were recorded in the towns of Gwoza and Pulka, located in Borno State. Female suicide bombers targeted a wedding, a hospital and the subsequent funeral for those killed in the initial attack on the wedding. A fourth woman detonated an explosive device prematurely, upon being confronted at a military checkpoint.
The following day, two women were arrested in Gwoza, accused of planning to carry out attacks in Borno State. Reports suggest there may be up to 30 more female attackers, reportedly affiliated with Jamaath Nusrathal Islam Wal Muslimeen (JNIM) and Boko Haram, suggesting the attacks are part of a wider plot.
At the time of writing, the death toll has reached 32 people. This figure was confirmed by Vice President Kashim Shettima. As of yet, no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, although Boko Haram are known to operate in the area.
