Somalia – IS UAVs and RC BME recovered from Bari Region
In an operation, dubbed as ‘Operation Hilaac’ (lightning), the Puntland Security Force (PSF) has made several advances against Islamic State (IS) positions in the Bari Region. The operation, which began in late December 2024, has dismantled several IS hideouts and logistics stores located in the Al-Miskaad (Cal Miskaat) mountains. Puntland officials claim that hundreds of IS fighters have entered the eastern mountainous region which has historically been a hub for terrorist groups seeking to establish a foothold in the Horn of Africa. IS-Somalia (ISS) has operated in the Cal Miskaat area since 2015, with figures indicating 1000-1200 militants currently operating in the Puntland. In response to the growing threat, Operation Hilaac has targeted key areas in the region, neutralising several fighters and capturing major IS command posts and bases.
On 11 January 2025, Puntland Counter-Terrorism Operations released progress images from the operation. The forces also reported intercepting nine drones, including ISR and explosive-laden quadcopters which were intended for attacks on military bases. Seen in the images is an Evo Max 4T UAV with a release mechanism, two quadcopters and a UAV with a modified anti-personnel mine attached. RC BME was also recovered, including receivers and transmitters. Puntland Security Force’s spokesperson, General Mohamed Mahamud Ahmed (Faadhigo), has reportedly said that Operation Hilaac will continue until the objective of eliminating IS from Puntland State is achieved.
