Mexico – recovery of 68 IEDs in Los Hornos

On 23 April 2025, the ‘Secretaria de Seguridad Publica’ of Michoacan announced that they had intercepted five drone flights in Los Hornos, Apatzingan. The SSP and Defence Ministry also reported the recovery of 68 IEDs, each consisting of a black metal main charge of various sizes, with four stabiliser fins welded to the body. The devices, manufactured by cartels, each contained gunpowder as well as nails and splinters for fragmentation. It is likely that the devices were intended to be remotely delivered by UAV. 

Since the start of 2025, there has been a noticeable increase in the recovery of IEDs to be remotely delivered by UAV in Mexico. Such devices are typically manufactured with a loop on one end which allows them to be attached to the underside of a UAV.
