Mexico – IEDs located following operations in Loma Grande and Rosario Municipality

SSP Sinaloa
In a press release published by the Sinaloa Public Security Secretariat on 17 August 2025, the Mexican Army in coordination with the National Guard reported the recovery of four IEDs in two separate operations. In Loma Grande, three IEDs were seized, each consisting of a bomblet with tail fins. Additionally, in Rosario Municipality, Mexican federal agents located an IED, comprised of a large black metal cylinder with tail fins attached. The IEDs were possibly intended to be dropped by UAV.
OverSite has previously recorded events involving the recovery of IEDs by Mexican authorities in Sinaloa, in addition to documenting IEDs used by warring cartel factions. In a testimony to the U.S. Senate, Deputy Director of the U.S. Homeland Security’s counter-drone programme, Steven Willoughby expressed concerns over ‘threat actors expanding their malicious use of (drones)’. Notably it was stated that, since August 2024, Sinaloa Cartel factions have increasingly used IEDs to target one another in addition to reportedly using UAVs to attack Mexican authorities south of the border.
