At 00:58 on 24 August 2025, journalist Alberto Mesias Zarate’s residence in Huaral, Peru, was the target of an IED attack. CCTV shows a suspected extortionist igniting the fuse of a stick of Famesa Semigelatin Dynamite 65 before projecting it into the courtyard of the residence. Upon examining the device, Manchis, the family’s dog, extinguished the fuse. As a result, the device failed to function and no casualties were reported. Following the event, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit (UDEX) arrived at the scene to remove the IED and render it safe.
Gelatin dynamite is a primary explosive comprised of a nitrocellulose-nitroglycerin mixture, offering a higher concentration of nitroglycerin within the compound in comparison to powder dynamite. Thus, semigelatin dynamite provides greater detonation velocities and improved water resistance.
This event highlights the ongoing IED threat in the Lima Department, commonly occurring in conjunction with extortion attempts.
