Iraq – Parliamentary candidate assassinated in Tarmiyah

On 15 October, Safaa Al-Mashhadani, a Baghdad Provincial Council member and the National Sovereignty Alliance’s (Al-Siyada) Parliamentary Candidate, was assassinated in an attack involving a UVIED.

The device was attached to the underbelly of Al-Mashhadani’s Chevrolet Tahoe. While travelling through Tarmiyah, a town 56 kilometres north of Baghdad, the device detonated. Al-Mashhadani and two companions travelling alongside him were killed instantly.

Recently, the National Sovereignty Alliance, and more specifically Al-Mashhadani, have been gaining in popularity in the capital, making him a prominent figure in Iraq’s political sphere. With parliamentary elections due to take place on 11 November, this attack highlights the threat of political violence seen historically in Iraq during electoral cycles.
