Spain – Criminal network transporting narcotics from Morocco to Spain dismantled under Operation ‘Ruche’

Guardia Civil
In conjunction with the Royal Moroccan Gendarmerie, the Spanish Police (Guardia Civil) detected several unidentified drone flights between Morocco and Spain. Up to 10 drones were simultaneously launched from Spain towards Morocco, returning with packages equipped with fluorescent markers and radio-linked geolocation devices. The criminal network smuggled approximately 200 kg (440 lbs) of hashish in a single night.
As part of Operation Ruche (Hive), five raids were carried out on 10 November across Cadiz Province. A total of 18 UAVs and €320,000 in cash was recovered. Police state that a workshop was used by criminals to modify the UAVs’ electronic systems and reinforce the fuselages with lightweight materials for the purposes of cross-border drug smuggling. Nine people have been arrested so far in connection with the raids.
Last year, Spanish police discovered a criminal network using UAVs manufactured in Ukraine to transport hashish from Morocco to Spain.
