Afghanistan – ISKP attack at a Chinese restaurant in Kabul

On 19 January 2026, a SPBIED attack targeted Chinese citizens at a Chinese restaurant in the commercial Shahr-e-Naw District of Kabul. The explosion occurred at approximately 15:00. Reports state that the perpetrator waited for 30 minutes, before detonating the suicide vest.

The Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) later claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it had designated Chinese nationals as targets in response to ‘growing crimes by the Chinese government against Uighurs’.

Islamic State (IS) has previously claimed an attack in Shahr-e-Naw District, Kabul. On 12 December 2022, members of ISIS targeted a hotel frequented by Chinese diplomats and businessmen in a complex attack.
