Ecuador – vehicle borne IED BME found in Ibarra

On 11 January 2024, the National Police of Ecuador arrested seven members of a criminal group and seized two vehicles intended to be used as vehicle borne IEDs (VBIEDs) in attacks across the city of Ibarra. The two vehicles were found to contain 2 LPG cylinders and 30 sticks of dynamite. It was verified that the vehicles loaded with explosives were stolen in Machala and the Metropolitan District of Quito.

Since the start of 2024, Ecuador has seen a wave of mass gang violence sweep across the country, culminating in a state of emergency being declared.
