India – Courthouse Bombers: Case Closed
On 4 November 2024, the Principal Sessions Court in Kollam sentenced three individuals, Abbas Ali, Karim Raja and Dawood Sulaiman to life imprisonment for their involvement in an IED attack in Kollam in 2016. They were convicted in accordance with the Explosives Act, Prevention of Destruction of Public Property Act, and Sections 16B, 18, and 20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. In addition to 307, 324, and 427 of the Indian Penal Code.
At approximately 10:45 am on 15 June 2016, a low-intensity IED concealed in a tiffin tin was placed in the vehicle of a government official, near the Kollam Munsiff Court. The device was detonated by a timer.
The perpetrators, affiliated with the Base Movement (Al Qaeda) were also charged for additional attacks at courthouses in Chittoor (7 April 2016), Mysore (1 August 2016), Nellore (12 September 2016), and Malappuram (1 November 2016). Karim Raja was identified as being the person responsible for placing the devices at each site.
