India – Recovery of Zigana pistols by Border Security Force
In an operation on 22 January 2025, the Border Security Force (BSF) recovered a package, containing four pistols, that was remotely delivered by UAV. Weighing over five kilograms, the package was dropped by a Pakistani drone near Raja Thal village in Amritsar District. It contained a total of four semi-automatic Zigana pistols and seven magazines.
The Zigana series was first produced in 2001 by TISAS Trabzon Arms Industry based in Turkey and is mainly used by security companies and some units of the Turkish Armed Forces. The pistol features a locked breech, short recoil operation and a Browning-type locking system with an automatic firing pin block.
The BSF has previously intercepted and recovered UAVs remotely delivering narcotics such as heroin across the border. The events all follow the same modus operandi (MO), with the contraband being wrapped in yellow adhesive tape with multiple illuminating sticks attached and an improvised hook allowing the package to be dropped. Since November 2024, three recorded instances involved the cross-border smuggling of weapons, suggesting criminal organisations’ use of UAVs to deliver larger items such as weaponry.
