Italy – ATM explosion in Scerni

Criminals targeted the ‘Banca Di Credito Cooperativo Sangro Teatino’ ATM in Scerni, Italy on 14 December 2024. The first device was used to target the ATM’s anti-burglary system known as the ‘guillotine'. An additional IED was used to open the drawer contained inside the ATM. A technique known as ‘Marmot’ was used which typically involves criminals inserting a device into the banknote dispensing slot with a metal bar and initiating the device with a length of command wire and a battery.
In the past month, the OSTD has recorded several other events in Italy involving the use of the ‘Marmot’ technique. A similar technique known as the ‘pizza chef’s shovel’ has been used to target an ATM in Calahonda, Spain.
