Peru – attack against the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Trujillo
On 20 January 2025, Jimmy Bazan Valderrama (alias ‘Pequeno’), alleged leader of 'Los Compadres', claimed responsibility for an attack against the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Trujillo. Since 2017, Los Compadres has operated in the La Libertad Region, concentrating in the city of Trujillo. The group is known for its involvement in criminal acts such as extortion, car theft and land trafficking. According to Interior Minister, Juan Jose Santivanez, the main objective of the attack was to intimidate the prosecutor in charge of extending Los Compadres' preventive detention.
CCTV footage reveals that the perpetrators, posing as food delivery men, left an IED containing ANFO and dynamite inside a food delivery backpack, outside of the Public Prosecutor’s Office headquarters. Reports state that at least two explosions were heard, resulting in significant damage to infrastructure and a vehicle, as well as two casualties. Five people allegedly linked to the attack were arrested by La Libertad Police a day later, found with sticks of dynamite.
Following the attack, President Dina Boluarte declared a state of emergency. This incident is the second attack recorded by EWS’ OSTD in Trujillo this year.
