Somalia – Al-Shabaab claim VBIED attacks in Mogadishu
Al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility for a SVBIED attack that took place on 21 August 2024. The attack targeted a National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) checkpoint in Garasbaley District, on the outskirts of Mogadishu, killing at least five people and injuring fourteen. Later, a second VBIED was intercepted and rendered safe by NISA personnel in Ceelasha Biyaha.
The is part of ongoing violence in Somalia, following the Lido Beach SPBIED attack on 2 August 2024. This was the deadliest attack in Somalia in almost two years and led to the arrest of several security forces employees for negligence. In recent weeks, a number of civilian and military locations across Somalia have been targeted by Al-Shabaab with IEDs.
