Sri Lanka – false alarm in Evariwatta

A University of Sydney student was detained on 9 February 2024 by authorities at Bandaranaike International Airport, Evariwatta in Sri Lanka, after they discovered a shoe which had an electronic circuit installed inside. Allegedly, the shoe was created for a university project whereby the battery could be charged when walking.
However, when examined by EOD, it was determined that a detonator and a small amount of explosives could be used to detonate the circuit. The 27-year old resident of Nattandiya has since been released on bail by the Negombo Magistrate Court.
