Syria – SPBIED attack targeting the Prophet Elias Church in Damascus

On 22 June 2025, CCTV footage showed a suicide bomber opening fire before detonating an explosive vest at 18:31 in the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elias in Damascus. Reports stated that over 100 individuals were injured and at least 25 were killed as a result of the attack.
In coordination with the General Intelligence Service, Syria’s Interior Ministry has arrested several suspects in connection with the attack. Following a raid on an ISIS hideout in the Damascus Governorate, a VBIED was recovered, intended to be used in a further plot to cause mass-casualties within Damascus. The event was claimed by both ISIS and Saraya Ansar Al-Sunna (Brigade of Sunni Supporters).

Sunday’s attack was the first significant attack within Damascus since the fall of former President Bashar Al-Assad in December 2024.
