Thailand – Command Initiated IED targeting a military truck in Bacho, Yala Province
At 10:15 on 17 September 2024, four soldiers were wounded when a paramilitary patrol from the 33rd Ranger Regiment was targeted with a command initiated IED in Bacho, Thailand.
It is reported that the unit was conducting a routine patrol in the area when they were targeted by insurgents hiding in a nearby bush. The IED weighed over 50 kg and comprised of a gas cylinder buried along the roadside. During investigations wires, shrapnel, and electronic components were later found at the explosion site. In response to this incident authorities have increased patrols in the area to prevent further attacks.
In July 2024, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) issued a new ‘high threat’ alert warning for Thailand. The FCDO has advised against travel in Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Southern Songkhla Provinces, stating that “there are regular terrorist attacks in the 4 provinces in the southern tip of Thailand by the border with Malaysia.”
