Thailand – Recovery of two UAVs in Sadao District

On 12 June 2025, two hexacopter UAVs were found buried near the Thailand-Malaysia border in Sadao District, Songkhala Province. Thai rescue workers from Samnak Kham and police patrolling in Ban Dan Nok were notified by a village headman of the presence of a pit dugout in the area. Upon closer inspection the UAVs were found concealed in hard cases. Initial sources suggested that the UAVs were capable of being used for cross-border smuggling of narcotics.
It is suspected that the larger UAV was possibly intended to be used to transport drugs. The smaller UAV was likely used for the purpose of surveying of routes across the Thailand-Malaysian border. Officers from the Forensic Science Centre and the EOD team found that the serial numbers had been scratched off the drones. Three Chinese nationals were arrested in Chiang Rai Province in connection with the UAVs.
