Thailand – VOIED planted at the Thailand-Cambodia border

Royal Thai Army (RTA)
On 31 August 2025 at 11:50, Thai troops from the 27th Infantry Battalion recovered a VOIED, consisting of two mortar shells attached to a tripwire. The device was positioned 1.7 km from the Prasat Ta Kwai ancient temple in Phanom Dong Rak District, Surin Province. The Royal Thai Army (RTA) released a statement claiming the Cambodian Army had violated the ceasefire agreement between the two countries, signed on 28 July 2025. Thai Army spokesman Maj-Gen Winthai Suvaree described the event as a ‘provocative act by Cambodia to intensify border tensions’.
Strong Cambodian military control of Prasat Ta Kwai is still in place, with heavily fortified defences and minefields. Thai troops currently occupy positions only 30 m from the temple, having made four unsuccessful attempts to reclaim the religious site.
