Ukraine – RCIED disguised as toy duck

On 23 January 2025, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported that two 19-year-old men were arrested following an attempted attack on police officers.

The suspects were allegedly instructed by the Russian Special Services via Telegram to deliver a package to an apartment in Zhytomyr. During an inspection of the apartment, law enforcement officers located two RCIEDs. The first RCIED consisted of a cylindrical main charge wrapped in grey tape and disguised as a yellow duck soft toy. The second comprised of a portable speaker. Additionally, a thermos with unspecified explosives was found at the scene.

The perpetrators had planned to make a false call to the National Police in Zhytomyr to lure police officers to the apartment where the RCIEDs had been installed. A mobile phone was set up by the perpetrators to video the attack, a M.O. previously used during a series of attacks in November 2024.
