Ukraine – Sea Baby USVs engage Russian helicopters in Kerch Bay
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) released video footage of USVs, known as ‘Sea Baby’, engaging Russian aircraft and ‘Raptor’ patrol boats in the Kerch Bay of the Republic of Crimea. The event took place on 6 December 2024, when Russian Mi-8 helicopters, aircraft and Raptor-class patrol boats attempted to intercept the USVs. Videos from the targeting system on the USVs’ machine guns, likely a 12.7 mm calibre, revealed the Sea Baby USVs’ features, including ballistic fire controls for automatic guidance and target lock-on capabilities.
According to the SBU, intercepted radio communications indicated significant damage to the helicopters and casualties among the crew. The SBU USVs also hit a Russian barge used to transport military equipment for the repair of the Crimean Bridge. Additionally seen in the footage are Russian SU-30 fighter jets.
The Sea Baby USV has previously been used by the SBU to plant underwater mines in the Republic of Crimea, resulting in damage to four Russian ships. The SBU’s Brigadier General of Military Counterintelligence, Ivan 'Hunter' Lukashevych reported that the USVs had covered an area more than 3,000 miles (4,828 km) and planted over 15 underwater mines in the Crimean waters.
