United States – ISIS inspired attack outside NYC Mayor Mamdani’s residence

On 7 March 2026, two men inspired by ISIS threw two IEDs during a protest and counter demonstration which took place outside Gracie Mansion in Manhattan. One device ignited but failed to detonate, while the second was lit but subsequently dropped on the street. The IEDs were compromised of a glass jar surrounded by nuts, screws and bolts, in addition to an attached fuse. Preliminary testing showed that one device contained TATP, a highly volatile explosive. 

Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi were arrested at the scene and later charged in connection with the attack.

The following day, another IED was recovered from a vehicle linked to the two suspects on East End Avenue between 81st and 82nd Street. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force has taken the lead in launching a terrorism investigation.
