USA – investigation into Trump rally shooting reveals explosives in gunman’s vehicle
On 13 July 2024, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks attempted to assassinate former US President Donald Trump with an AR-15-style rifle at an election rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Crooks was later shot dead by the US Secret Service, with multiple media outlets stating that a 12-channel transmitter was recovered from his body. Two RCIEDs were also located inside the suspect’s vehicle, as well as a DJI UAV, four magazines and a tactical vest. It was later reported that the UAV was flown over the site of the campaign rally hours before.
Latest reports described the devices as a cardboard tube filled with grey powder and prills with an electric detonator inserted, wired to an AlphaFire firework receiver. The devices were contained within ammunition cans, one metal and one plastic. During searches at Crooks' residence, the FBI found another explosive device, ten additional receivers and electric detonators. It is not known how Crooks intended to use the devices at this time.
