80,000 recorded IED and RCIED Events entered on EWS Open Source Threat Database (OSTD)

The Open Source Threat Database (OSTD) has recorded it’s 80,000th event in May 2026. OSTD is an unclassified global database relied upon by customers for data on IED and RCIED events. The database amalgamates information from a wide variety of open sources and provides detailed technical data and specifications as well as highlighting emerging trends in rapidly evolving environments.

OSTD is updated regularly by EWS’ Intelligence Team and is integrated with global monitoring features that incorporate rich multimedia content. Its extensive coverage and up to date information make it an essential tool for comprehensive threat analysis.

Each event recorded on EWS’ OSTD combines key information from a range of open sources that is presented in a user-friendly format. Intelligence Analysts cross-reference and validate information, providing detail and highlighting emerging tactics, techniques and procedures. OSTD’s vast dataset helps deliver actionable intelligence data from which informed decisions can be made to maintain operational advantages.

80,000 OSTD Event

The 80,000th event on the OSTD recorded an incident in the United States involving ten IEDs consisting of pipes as well as twenty propane tanks placed in a rental vehicle. On Saturday 2 May 2026 at 02:49, employees at the Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC) in Portland, Oregon reported a vehicle driving slowly around a building prior to crashing into windows. The vehicle was subsequently engulfed in flames. Due to the location’s proximity to Providence Park, additional safety resources including local and federal agencies were mobilised to mitigate any potential ongoing threats.

The Metropolitan Explosive Disposal Unit (MEDU) and their partner agencies located multiple incendiary and improvised explosive devices, of which a number had partially detonated. In a news conference Portland Police Burea (PPB) Chief Bob Day stated that ‘With the best of information we have right now, this was an isolated event and not related to domestic terrorism’. The driver, who was deceased, was later identified as Bruce Valentine Whitman. Investigations on this incident are currently being conducted by Portland Police in conjunction with the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
