Pakistan – VBIED Attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province

On 12 May 2026, a VBIED consisting of a rickshaw loaded with unspecified explosives functioned in the main market of Sarai Naurang, Lakki Marwat District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. Two police personnel were killed, in addition to a further seven civilians killed and thirty wounded. Despite Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) condemning the attack, their involvement has been alleged by the Pakistan Government. Investigations into the nature of the attack are ongoing.

This attack follows a string of recent events in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, including an SVBIED attack which occurred days prior in Bannu District. Pakistan is experiencing a resurgence in terrorist activity, as documented in the Global Terrorism Index of 2026, who currently rank Pakistan as the country most impacted by terrorism. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province specifically is experiencing the highest levels of militancy, recorded in a review conducted by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS).
