On 1 February 2025, an armed criminal group attacked an Inter-Institutional Operations Base Cell (BOI) convoy, deployed in the Guadalupe y Calvo Municipality, in a complex attack with explosive-laden UAVs and automatic weapons.
As a result of the attack, four individuals were injured including the commander of the 42nd Military Zone, Jorge Alejandro Gutiérrez Martínez. Several military and State Investigation Agency vehicles were also damaged. Three additional UAVs were reportedly intercepted in the same area.
The Attorney General of the State of Chihuahua, César Jáuregui Moreno, reported that investigations revealed the drones used in the attack were “simple” (not armoured or specialised for attacks). Moreno added that the remotely delivered explosives were identified as Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
An increase in attacks and seizures of IEDs intended to be remotely delivered by UAV, from various armed criminal groups in Mexico, is noted in EWS’ OSTD and OverSite.
