Russia – Modified FPV goggles with plastic explosives seized

Russian FPV drone operators received a batch of modified FPV goggles intended to be transported to the front lines. Images published online show Skyzone Cobra X V4 FPV goggles alongside a plastic box containing 10-15 grams of plastic explosives and a detonator installed in place of the cooling fan. The first case of an IED concealed in goggles was recorded in Belgorod Oblast on the 4th February 2025. Several other incidents have occurred in Kursk, Luhansk and Donetsk Oblasts.
The VOIEDs consisted of a circuit linked to a power button, designed to function when switched on. According to Igor Potapov, a representative of JSC NPP, which develops and supplies EW equipment to Russian forces, the goggles were allegedly transferred via humanitarian aid packages. Skyzone Cobra x4 goggles consists of a wraparound headset consisting of a headset with a 5.8 GHz Steadyview receiver and a high-resolution LCD screen.
Matthew Ford, a lecturer in International Relations at the UK’s University of Sussex, compared the reports to Israel’s attack on Hezbollah in Lebanon involving pagers in September 2024.
