On the 11 January 2026, images circulating online showed a number of IED-laden UAVs, FPV UAVs, IEDs and BME in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighbourhood of Aleppo. The Syrian Ministry of Interior stated that the cache recovered was attributed to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
Additional operations conducted in affiliation with the Internal Security Command in Aleppo Governorate located explosive devices in residences, buildings and in vehicles parked in the streets.
In January 2026, the Syrian Government mobilised for an offensive in Aleppo following months of prolonged negotiations with Kurdish led factions such as the SDF. Fighting has been centralised around two Kurdish-majority neighbourhoods in Aleppo, Ashrafiyeh and Sheikh Maqsoud. On the 11 January 2026, SDF personnel left Aleppo following a ceasefire deal which opened up two corridors for the evacuation of Kurdish-majority areas until curfew came into effect. Due to clashes in the Aleppo Province, nearly 140,000 people have been displaced.
