El Salvador – National Civil Police of El Salvador foil IED plot
On 31 May 2024, the National Civil Police of El Salvador announced that they had seized a variety of IEDs in Guazapa Municipality.
The IEDs were intended to be used as part of a plot to target several locations across El Salvador on 1 June 2024, the day of President Nayib Bukele’s inauguration.
The plot has been attributed to a group known as the ‘Salvadoran Insurrection Brigade’ and involved Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) veterans of the Salvadoran Civil War.
A former congressman, Jose Santos Melara, has also been detained. Police allege he helped to finance the plot.
